Hey, we knew it was coming: "Evacuate the city, engage all defenses, and get this man a shield," says King T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) as a bearded Captain America (Chris Evans) emerges from the shadows in the first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War.
If you'll recall, Cap turned his trademark weapon over to Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) at the end of Captain America: Civil War. Since then, he's been fighting criminals abroad with Black Widow and Falcon without his signature shield.
So, what shield is Wakanda's king referring to?
The answer is hinted at in the first look at the movie's tie-in toys from the Marvel Legends line. In a post by Twitter user Alfred Murphy, we see the boxes for Spider-Man, Iron Man, Proxima Midnight (a member of the Black Order and henchman of Thanos), and Captain America, who's got a gray and silver shield that's more perpendicular than it is round. Considering that he's in Wakanda, a nation rich with Vibranium deposits, this new shield is probably made of the same material as his original red, white, and blue one.
It will most likely be a gift from T'Challa, and perhaps, later on in the film (or maybe in Avengers 4), Tony will be like "Hey, Cap! ... Catch!" and throw the old shield to his friend in an act symbolizing that the hatchet is finally buried. But for the time being, Cap will use the (presumably) Wakandan-made shield in the epic battle we see in the trailer.
As you can see in the photo above, each toy comes with a separate piece of Thanos, which means you'll have to buy them all if you want to pit them against the Mad Titan. Gives a whole new meaning to "Avengers assemble," doesn't it? And speaking of the Avengers, another member is getting a new weapon as well. Thor's hammer was destroyed in Ragnarok by his sister Hela. His new fighting tool, teased in his Infinity War Funko POP! vinyl figure, resembles "some kind of combination of axe and warhammer." Which should sound familiar to comic fans.
Avengers: Infinity War assembles on May 5.
