Dream Casting is an imaginative look at the casting process of potential Hollywood projects based on comics and other media. This isn't just about what is being made; this is about what should be made, and who we think should be the stars.
This week we're continuing the imaginary Nintendo adaptations with a new live action Castlevania. Ignoring the recent anime version and looking back to the games, we're focusing on Simon Belmont rather than Trevor. I did steal some of Trevor's supporting cast, but you could always say that Dracula turned them into monsters, and when Simon turns them back they haven't aged.
I like to imagine this movie as 17th Century vampire-hunting John Wick with a whip. Dracula has caused the Belmont family immeasurable pain over generations, and Simon is going to get his revenge, no matter how many monsters he has to kill on his way to the Lord of the Undead.
Sam Claflin as Simon Belmont
If most of the movie is going to be one guy killing monsters with a whip, you need a pretty charismatic guy to pull that off. Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) has that in spades.
Benicio Del Toro as Dracula
Benicio Del Toro (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) puts a weird spin, and usually a new accent, on every role he plays. His Dracula would be recognizable as the classic character but still totally unique.
Diego Luna as Alucard
Diego Luna (Rogue One) is great at pulling off that mix of charisma and danger that you want from Dracula's rebellious son.
Charles Dance as Death
Dracula is such a badass that Death himself is his right-hand man. Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) has the perfect voice and demeaner for the literal Grim Reaper.
Emily Rios as Carmilla
Emily Rios (Snowfall) is a great beauty who projects a palpaple inner strength, which will show through as the mighty vampire Carmilla.
Lily Rose Depp as Laura
I used an image from a later game (there's not much art of Castlevania's original Laura), but I'm more interested in the version who first seems like a damsel in distress and then turns out to be Carmilla's vampire lover. I think Lily-Rose Depp (The Summoning) is perfect for that illusion of innocence giving way to evil.
Jane Levy as Sypha Belnades
Jane Levy (Don't Breathe) has already made a name for herself in horror, and she'll be great as the good witch Sypha Belnades.
Ludi Lin as Grant Danasty
If there's room for a heroic pirate in your movie, always include one. Ludi Lin (Power Rangers) can handle Danasty's unique fighting style.
Tom Hardy as Trevor Belmont
Simon's ancestor Trevor should be not much more than a cameo in this movie, and putting Tom Hardy (Venom) in the role will immediately clue you in on the sort of mighty hero he was.
