Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson still won't say which DC superhero he's apparently ready to play, but he is happy to offer some hints.
Johnson was at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this week to promote his upcoming film Hercules: The Thracian Wars, but he was also talking about future projects, including the disaster flick San Andreas and, of course, those persistent whispers that he'll be joining the DC Comics movie universe soon. Johnson himself re-ignited talk of a superhero role during a fan Q&A on Twitter at the end of last year, and there have since been rumors that he's set to appear in an upcoming Justice League movie as Green Lantern John Stewart, a rumor Johnson himself hasn't denied.
Neither Johnson nor Warner Bros. is confirming who the action star will play, or when he'll appear, but while speaking with journalists at CinemaCon, Johnson did say that they've "found that character" for him to play after "years" of discussion. Once again, Johnson didn't name names when pressed to reveal the character, but he did offer what he considers to be three major qualities the character has. Here's what he said:
“The first quality we were looking for was that he had to be extremely complex and have a lot going on,” he said. “What that does for me as an actor and the studio is it gives us space that we can explore; his complexities.
“The other quality was that he had to – the character we were looking for had to be well-known but never brought to life. Then what that does again as an actor, it gives me a little bit of space, and we talked about personality. It just gives me a chance to put an imprint into his personality, with the set of tools that I could bring to the table and put a very unique twist on his personality, but still pay homage to who he is.”
“The third thing – and most important – is he had to be a badass mother***ker, OK, and on a Superman level of power, where [he] could throw down. In those three qualities, I’m happy we’ve found that character.”
Now, actors talking up the complexity of the roles they play is nothing new, but the other two qualities may offer us some more concrete clues. The character is "well-known but never brought to life," so we can rule out anyone Warner Bros. has put on film before, and apparently he's also "on a Superman level of power." That doesn't necessarily narrow things down much in the DC universe, and what exactly a "Superman level of power" really means varies from creator to creator and even reader to reader.
With all that mind, who do you think we're talking about here? Is it John Stewart? Is it a villain like Doomsday? Is it Lobo? We might not know for sure until Warner Bros. wants us to, and though Johnson said an announcement could come as early as Comic-Con in July, it sounds just as likely at this point that we'll be waiting a while longer.
