EA responds to Star Wars Battlefront II backlash by removing in-game purchases

There’s been no shortage of drama ahead of Star Wars Battlefront II’s release – but kudos to EA Games for listening to the backlash from fans, and taking action to rectify it with just hours to spare.

Many gamers had begun to file complaints over the length of time and financial commitment it will take to unlock contact, with one poster on ResetEra, an online video game forum, claiming that unlocking everything in the game costs 4,528 hours or $2,100.

Now Oskar Gabrielson, GM of Battlefront II developer DICE, has apologized to fans in a statement posted on Thursday, confirming that they will temporarily remove microtransactions from the game. Gabrielson said, in part: “We hear you loud and clear, so we’re turning off all in-game purchases. We will now spend more time listening, adjusting, balancing and tuning. This means that the option to purchase crystals in the game is now offline, and all progression will be earned through gameplay.”

Gabrielson added that crystals will be available to purchase in-game at a later date.

Before the announcement was made, players were expecting to either earn credits that unlock bonus material by putting a helluva lot of time and patience into it, or by getting their wallets out. Some gamers likened the so-called “Loot crates” to online gambling, which are mystery bonuses where you can only access the content after paying for them. It’s not hard to see why the uproar erupted so quickly.

But on a positive note, it seems Gabrielson and the rest of the team have taken notice, and he’s even promised that there will be more free content down the road. You can read the full statement from Gabrielson here. The game is available Friday.
