He’s had a few movies on his radar, but we’ve been wondering exactly what genre project director Edgar Wright would tackle next in the wake of his messy divorce from Marvel’s Ant-Man. Turns out his next movie up is not exactly what you’d expect — and that is very, very exciting.
Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) is working with DreamWorks Animation on a new project that centers on the concept of shadows. Exactly what form it will take, well, we don’t know just yet. Wright will co-write the script with children’s author David Walliams, and the concept will apparently be a “new approach to a previously developed concept.” The studio had previously been developing a project dubbed Me & My Shadow.
“My first endeavors in film-making as a teenager were in animation, so it was hugely intriguing to get a call from DreamWorks Animation about potentially directing,” Wright said. “When the Shadows concept was suggested to me, I could see the poster, the title sequence and pretty much the whole movie. It’s a blast writing this and to have one of my oldest friends in comedy, David Walliams, along for the adventure is a thrill.”
Basically, it sounds like DreamWorks wants to make an animated film about shadows, but they haven’t nailed down the concept just right. So they’ve tapped Wright to take a crack at it, in hopes his comedy chops will help hit the right note. Assuming the project moves forward, it’ll mark Wright’s animated debut as a director. We can’t wait to see how this one turns out.
Before tackling the shadows project, Wright is also attached to direct the crime drama Baby Driver, starring Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Kevin Spacey, Ansel Elgort and Lily James.
