Director Marc Webb already let us know that he’s hard at work on Amazing Spider-Man 2, and now the studio has confirmed the news—along with a few juicy plot details.
It seems the mystery surrounding Peter Parker’s (Andrew Garfield) past, large chunks of which were cut from the first film, will feature heavily in the sequel. We’ll also get to meet the new version of Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), along with new baddies Electro (Jamie Foxx) and the Rhino (Paul Giamatti).
Oh, and in case you were thinking Peter’s relationship with Mary Jane (Shailene Woodley) would spark up here, it sounds like he’s still fully committed to the lovely Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). But Woodley does make the cut in the main cast list. So drama will likely be brewing, possibly to set up a third installment.
Here is the press release announcing production:
Columbia Pictures announced today that filming has begun on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in New York. The film is the first in the history of the franchise that will be filmed entirely in New York City and New York State.
The sequel to last year’s critical and box office hit The Amazing Spider-Man, the film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Shailene Woodley, Dane DeHaan, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti, and Sally Field.
In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past...
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens May 2, 2014. Do you like the direction Webb has taken the franchise?
