We all know Gwen Stacy's comic-book story, but will that be the same story we see on the big screen?
Emma Stone has teased before that she'd like her Gwen Stacy character to eventually follow the same legendary path as the comic-book version. Gwen famously perished after being taken hostage by Green Goblin in Amazing Spider-Man #121 (June 1973), and her death changed both Spider-Man and the larger Marvel universe (not to mention the tone of comic-book storytelling at the time) forever. Stone has called Gwen's death a "hugely important" part of the Spider-Man story in the past, and it seems she still believes that staying true to that classic story is in the character's best interest.
Speaking to Ryan Seacrest on his radio show Wednesday, Stone teased the arrival of a new Amazing Spider-Man 2 clip (which will also air during the Super Bowl Sunday) on Thursday and again addressed where the plot of the next flick is heading, and where Gwen's place in it is.
”Basically they’re going to see the continuation of the Spider-Man story, which is the hero’s journey, and he’s up against a whole new squadron of villains and he’s struggling with promises he’s made in the last movie and the consequences of making those and what it’s like to be in love with somebody who you promised to not see anymore, Stone said.
She then offered a very brief tease of what's next for Gwen, and if you know Gwen's comic-book story, it's not hard to guess what she's getting at.
”I think the intention the whole time has been to tell Gwen’s story as closely to the comic as possible," she said.
So, Stone's still not shy about the fact that Gwen's death is an important part of Spider-Man lore, and she doesn't seem ready to shy away from it happening. Will it happen in Amazing Spider-Man 2?
