One of Game of Thrones’ most ruthless characters is about to make his long-awaited debut on the upcoming season of the hit HBO series.
Sources over at Watchers on the Wall claim that Danish actor Pilou Asbæk (Borgen, The Borgias, Lucy, Ben-Hur) has been cast in the role of Euron Greyjoy -- an exiled pirate captain who is the eldest of Lord Balon Greyjoy's younger brothers and Theon (Alfie Allen) and Yara's (Gemma Whelan) uncle -- for the sixth season of Game of Thrones.
The actor was apparently spotted filming a scene around Ballintoy Harbour, Northern Ireland, with an assembled crowd cheering for Euron. The report says the scene being filmed was the Kingsmoot, an event that takes place in book four of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire saga, A Feast for Crows. Even though the series has mostly caught up with the books, it has yet to happen on the TV series.
Yara was apparently present for the pivotal book scene, but Victarion was nowhere to be seen (as was expected, since there were no casting calls for that character. Plus, with Euron Greyjoy there, the show doesn’t really need Victarion. They can easily meld the storylines of the two Greyjoy brothers into one single narrative). However, one source did see someone who appeared to be Aeron Damphair, the Drowned Priest who leads the Kingsmoot, and another Greyjoy brother. They couldn’t make out if it was the same actor who appeared in Season 2.
If Pilou Asbæk has indeed been cast in the role of Euron Crowe’s Eye (there's no official confirmation from HBO yet, so grain of salt), I have to admit the actor doesn’t exactly fit the mental image I had of the character. Doesn't mean I'm not excited to see what the actor will bring to the table as the dreaded, one-eyed pirate. On the contrary! I'm totally looking forward to it. It'll be good to have the ironborn brought back into the fold on Game of Thrones after a few seasons spent on the bench.
