We know X-Men: Apocalypse is coming, we know who's writing it and who's directing it, we know Oscar Isaac will debut as the title character and that James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence and others will return to their roles. What we don't yet know is who will play the younger versions of the X-Men who starred in the original films, including Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm. A few months back a shortlist of actors for the first two characters emerged that included Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar), Hailee Steinfeld (Ender's Game) and Chloe Moretz (Carrie), but we haven't heard of any progress with any of those young stars yet. Now we've got some new names to add to the list.
Latino Review reports that Fox is testing three more actors for young Cyclops, two for young Jean, and two for young Storm. They range from little-known rising stars to established names with real genre cred, and here they are.
The new young Cyclops contenders are, from left to right, Taron Edgerton, Jamie Blackley and Tye Sheridan. You might recognize Edgerton the most easily at the moment, since he's been in all those action-packed trailers for Kingsman: The Secret Service, which hits theaters next month and seems poised to give him plenty of new opportunities in the near future. Blackley's had roles in films like Snow White and the Huntsman and The Fifth Estate, but he might be best known now for starring alongside Moretz in last year's If I Stay. Sheridan's had roles in acclaimed indie films like Tree of Life and Mud, and you'll see him star in Scouts vs. Zombies when it hits theaters this Halloween.
The two new Jean Grey faces probably need no introduction: Sophie Turner on the left and Saoirse Ronan on the right. Ronan's the bigger name, with leading roles in films like Hanna, Atonement and The Lovely Bones in a career that goes back a decade even though she's only 20. Turner, though, has lots of nerd fans thanks to her role as Sansa Stark on HBO's Game of Thrones, a role that took an interesting turn in the last season. She'll also star as author Mary Shelley in the upcoming film Mary Shelley's Monster.
Now we come to young Storm, and the two young actress reportedly testing to replace Halle Berry in the role. On the left is Alexandra Shipp, who you might know from Nickelodeon's House of Anubis, and who recently appeared in Aaliyah: Princess of R&B in the title role. On the right is Zendaya Coleman, an actress and singer who starred on the Disney sitcom Shake It Up.
So we've got these new names, but what about the old ones? Are there any particular frontrunners? Well, we don't know yet, but The Wrap's Jeff Sneider did add via Twitter that he's heard Chloe Moretz has already passed on the Jean Grey role, and that Sheridan is now the frontrunner to play Cyclops. What do you think? Who would you cast?
