We’d been keeping our expectations in check when it came to Syfy’s upcoming 12 Monkeys series, but the first trailer actually looks pretty great.
Based on Terry Gilliam’s 1995 sci-fi classic of the same name, the series will follow a time traveler from the post-apocalyptic future tasked with unraveling the mystery of a deadly plague that eventually wipes out humanity. The series looks to trace some of the big ideas from the film, but with a new spin.
The first trailer introduces us to the time traveler Cole, played by Aaron Sanford (Nikita, X-Men), as we get a look at the burned-out future and the present day as he tries to stay on mission and figure out how to save the future.
As for the rest of the cast? It’s loaded with faces that should be familiar to sci-fi fans, with Kirk Acevedo (Fringe), Zeljko Ivanek (Revolution) and Noah Bean (Nikita) all popping up along the way. Amanda Schull (Suits, Pretty Little Liars) plays the new Cassandra Railly, a character who carries over from Gilliam’s film.
Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think:
We definitely dig the tone they’re striking with the series, and it almost has that lingering vibe that made us love Gilliam’s film so much. The producers have said they want to create a gritty time-travel drama — and that’s exactly how this seems to be shaping up. Fingers crossed.
12 Monkeys is slated to debut on Syfy in January 2015.
