We already know the upcoming reboot of horror classic The Evil Dead will feature all-new characters—meaning they're not even going to try and replicate the awesomeness of Bruce Campbell's Ash. But that doesn't mean Campbell won't pop up for a cameo.
In an interview with Dread Central, the film's producer Rob Tapert (who also worked on the 1981 original) tackled the question of whether Campbell might show up in a token role. His answer is intriguing, and it seems director Fede Alvarez wants to do something along the lines of a cameo.
But Tapert doesn't seem to be in favor of it. Here's an excerpt from the Q&A:
Question: Is Bruce going to be in this at all?Hmm, so it seems Tapert thinks it'd be a waste to even tease back to the original with a cameo. But the fans would probably love it (if it's handled well). What do you think? Are you pulling for a cameo, or do you hope they keep it a truly fresh take?
Rob Tapert: If Fede had his druthers, there's a gag that they want to do. I don't see it as having...it won't sell another ticket is what I say.
Question: In the nerd community it will.
Rob Tapert: You think so? It's a rip-off...unfortunately it's a rip-off, I think the audience will feel cheated. I think they're going to think somebody's Bruce right away and they're not so they're just going to be hanging out to see when he shows up. But anyway, we'll see what happens.
