For geeks of a certain age, growing up in the late 1970s meant a veritable treasure of Saturday morning cartoons, game shows galore, and now-classic TV series like Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Space: 1999, The Bionic Woman, and especially ABC's most-awesome cyborg,The Six Million Dollar Man.
The hit series aired from 1974 to 1978 and centered around the dangerous, top-secret missions of Steve Austin, a military test pilot crippled after an accident who is rebuilt with cutting-edge nuclear-powered limbs and bionic implants. It made a star of actor Lee Majors and spawned a spinoff starring Lindsay Wagner, The Bionic Woman.
In 2011 Dynamite Comics resurrected the nostalgic series as The Bionic Man, based on an unproduced 1998 screenplay for a Six Million Dollar Man feature film written by Clerks and Chasing Amy's Kevin Smith and paired with art by Jonathan Lau.
Smith was joined by Phil Hester and Aaron Gillespie on the scripts for the 26-issue run and pencils by Ed Tadeo and Rey Villegas starting after Issue #10. The retro title lasted until early 2014, when it was replaced with a new title taking off from the original series and celebrating the property's 40th anniversary.
"True story: When I turned in a script for The Six Million Dollar Man back in '98, there was an exec who dismissed it as being more like a comic book than a movie," said Smith. "It's an honor to head back into the trenches with the same creative team at Dynamite that made my Green Hornet script so readable and fun. It makes me moist."
A deluxe new 624-page omnibus edition of The Bionic Man is launching into the marketplace on Wednesday, March 7, and Dynamite is guaranteeing this massive volume will be better, stronger, and faster than anything else on the comic shop racks.
