Old Man Logan, Rogue, Gambit, Bishop, Psylocke, Archangel, Fantomex, and Mystique are the stars of Marvel’s Astonishing X-Men, but they’re not exactly a team. Instead, they were drawn together by the disembodied mind of their late mentor, Professor Charles Xavier, to confront one of his oldest foes: the Shadow King. Together, they were triumphant. But now a new threat has emerged in the Shadow King's wake.

Proteus has re-emerged from the astral plane, and that’s bad news for humanity and mutants alike. Proteus was once Kevin MacTaggert, one of the most powerful mutants alive. Reality itself can be bent to Proteus’ will, and he’s literally tearing London apart with his latest resurrection.

To complicate matters for the X-Men, Xavier has taken over Fantomex’s body and renamed himself “X.” No one is quite sure whether they can trust X, but he antagonized Proteus in their first encounter. That turned out to be a huge mistake, because Proteus retaliated by physically and mentally merging X and Psylocke.

In these exclusive Astonishing X-Men #9 preview pages by writer Charles Soule and guest artist Matteo Buffagni, the X-Men may have a secret weapon: Archangel’s metallic wings. Proteus is vulnerable to metal, and more than that, Archangel was once deeply in love with Psylocke may allow them to escape the reality storm that Proteus has created for them.

As you can see, their love is still very much alive, and it could once again ignite if they survive their current situation.

Finally, Old Man Logan comes up with a way to free X as well, but the preview ends on a somewhat ominous note. Was Psylocke truly saved from Proteus’ grasp? Or has he taken up residence inside of her head?
