If you like the look of Hellboy, you're about to have a lot more to love. In collaboration with The Hero Initiative, Dark Horse Comics and creator Mike Mignola announced The Hellboy 100, which launches today and features 100 contributed covers for Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1952 #1 from as many top industry artists -- and we're excited to exclusively reveal two covers, and share many others.
After publishing 100-plus blank covers to the new title -- written by John Arcudi and Mike Mignola, with art by Alex Maleev and Dave Stewart -- The Hero Initiative, described as the first "federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need," commissioned artists to create original work for the covers. With participating names such as Gabriel Bá, Rafael Albuquerque, Mike Oeming, Fábio Moon, Eric Powell, Bill Sienkiewicz and Mignola himself, the originals will be auctioned off via eBay.com at the rate of approximately 10 per week for 10 weeks. Then both hardcover and softcover editions of a book collecting all the covers will published by Dark Horse Comics in September 2015.
The action begins at noon ET today, when the gallery goes live. Then, at 12:30 ET, the auctions begin. But before the gallery even goes live, check out our sneak-peek gallery of images, along with our exclusive reveal of covers by Ryan Sook and Walt Flanagan.
In a statement regarding the work of the Hero Initiative -- which has raised $700,000 since its inception -- President Jim McLauchlin said, "many of the comic book creators working in the'50's, 60's and '70s had no ownership of their creations and receive limited or no royalties."
He added, "When creators have medical or financial problems they can't handle themselves, we help them. We've been able to save people's homes, prevent evictions, and get people the medical treatment they desperately need. The goal of the Hero Initiative is to improve creators' quality of life and in some cases, save lives."
Meanwhile, Mignola said he was glad he and Arcudi "could support the important work that Jim McLauchlin and the Hero Initiative does on behalf of comics' creative community."
