Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro's new animated series Trollhunters premieres on Netflix tomorrow, Dec. 23, but we have an exclusive preview to share with you right now.

The series is based on the children's novel of the same name that del Toro authored with Daniel Kraus in 2015. Jim Lake Jr., a 15-year-old voiced by the late Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), discovers an amulet that grants him a magic sword and plate armor, along with other powerful abilities. Whether he wants it or not, posessing the amulet means Jim is now the "Trollhunter," obligated to defend the city of good trolls hidden beneath his ordinary town from the evil enemies who have been waging war for centuries. If that's not enough, if Jim fails to protect the good trolls, then the evil trolls will spread their violence to the human world as well. Meanwhile, Jim remains a high school student with high school problems like a cruel bully and girl he has a crush on.

In the clip above, we see erudite six-eyed troll Blinky (Kelsey Grammer) explaining to Jim that he's the first human ever to be the Trollhunter. Then Blinky reveals to Jim and his best friend Toby (Charlie Saxton) the vast, glittering, and colorful Heartstone Market that is the center of the troll world.

With echoes of Arthurian legend and Norse mythology, Trollhunters reflects the combination of childlike wonder and dark undercurrents that del Toro has injected into his other works, including Pacific Rim, the Hellboy series and Pan's Labyrinth. The scariest trolls, for example, are called "Gumm-Gumms."

The series is co-produced by DreamWorks Animation (How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek) and also features the voices of Ron Perlman (Hellboy) and Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead). The full first season of 26 episodes, each 30 minutes long, will be available for binge-watching on Netflix tomorrow morning.
