The legend of the mermaid is pretty far-reaching. It's been captured in everything from Disney animation to a very sinister version in the Pirates of the Caribbean films.
Mermaids can also be more monstrous than mythical and it looks like we're going to get the former in Freeform's new series, Siren, which follows what happens when a wayward mermaid is pushed out of her comfort zone (the sea, obvs) and into tense encounters with humans.
Sitting down with two of Siren's resident mermaids, Fangrrls had the opportunity to talk about bringing such ladies of legend to life with stars Eline Powell (who plays Ryn) and Sibongile Mlambo (who plays Donna). Powell said she studied mammals from both sea and land in order to give a slightly subhuman quality to her character, while Mlambo told us that what she's most looking forward to is seeing the finished product of Donna as a mermaid on-screen.
What they both agreed on, however, was how much fun it was to get into the water to bring these sea myths to life.
Siren premieres March 29 at 8/7c on Freeform.
