The Exiles have always existed in Marvel’s fun, offbeat playground, an alternate side wing of the Marvel Multiverse where misfits and reimagined series heroes could romp through an occasional world-saving serial saga — without too much reverence for outside lore or canon.
If it’s the kind of mash-up you’ve enjoyed before, as with 2001’s original Exiles #1 or the short-lived, late-2000s New Exiles relaunch, get ready for more. Marvel has revealed a brand-new ongoing for the X-Men-connected series, set to launch in April 2018 under the simple, all-caps title of EXILES.
For the new series, the Unseen (aka Nick Fury) assembles a group of heroes both familiar and new — including the diminutive Wolvie, along with “an as-yet-unseen hero,” according to Marvel — “to save the past, the present, and the future” from his home base on the moon.
EXILES is being scripted by Saladin Ahmed (Black Bolt) and illustrated by Alvaro Lopez and Javier Rodriguez.
Ahmed, a self-described "Marvel fanboy” whose fantasy novel Throne of the Crescent Moon was nominated for a 2012 Hugo Award, convincingly captured the series’ fun tone as he helped announce the project at Marvel’s website.
“EXILES is a two-fisted, big-hearted wild ride of a book about a diverse team of alternate universe Marvel heroes banding together to stop a dire threat to the multiverse. Sort of WHAT IF? meets classic X-Men,” Ahmed wrote.
“Grizzled old Kamala Khan! Disgustingly cute cartoon Wolverine! It’s a dream of a book to be working on for a Marvel fanboy such as myself, full of deep-cut guest stars and mind-blowing easter eggs.”
While that sounds like plenty of service for longtime Marvel, ahem — fanboys, Ahmed promises the relaunch will be accessible to first-timers, calling it “new-reader friendly — a self-contained story of a group of misfits coming together, learning to trust each other, and, if they’re lucky, saving the !@$# universe.”
The mash-up also brings back Blink, the X-Men universe’s teleporting mutant, who’ll join forces with Khan, Iron Lad, Wolvie, and the mysterious new character to help the Unseen save the world.
EXLIES is set for an April 11 release to both digital and print.
