Star Trek has been entertaining us for decades (five, to be exact!) and in that time, we’ve been exposed to a wide variety of exotic and alien cuisines (Romulan Ale, anyone?!). While tossing back a fresh authentic glass of Bloodwine at Quark’s Bar might be next to impossible in real life, there is one Earthly beverage that you can easily enjoy at any time.
There is no drink Captain Picard enjoys more than a hot cup of Earl Grey tea with fresh lemon, and it’s easily his most requested beverage. (There are some who even say it’s the secret to his enduring good looks!)
We’ve taken this famous beverage and given it a sweet, crispy twist by turning it into a fun iced cookie, full of the delicate flavors of tea and lemon icing. Feel free to whip up a batch of these the next time you marathon your favorite season of Star Trek: TNG!
For this recipe you will need:
- ½ Cup sugar
- 1 stick of butter
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 Tbsp Earl Grey Tea Leaves finely crushed (equal to about 3 teabags)
- ½ tsp vanilla
- 1 ¼ cup flour
You will also need:
- Baking sheet
- Waxed paper
- Parchment paper
- Rolling pin
- Star shaped cookie cutter
Pre-heat your oven to 375F/190C
Cream together your butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add in the salt, crushed tea leaves, vanilla and flour.
The dough should be dry and crumbly but stick together when you squeeze it.
Pat the dough into a lump in the middle of a piece of waxed paper. Cover it with a second piece of paper and roll it to about 1/3” thick using your rolling pin.
Put your flattened dough into the fridge to cool for about 20 minutes.
Once it’s cooled, pull it out and peel off the top layer of waxed paper.
We’re going to be turning our cookies into edible Command Insignia Badges. Start by using your star cookie cutter to cut out individual stars.
Next, take your knife and chop off the two arms of your stars.
Using your spatula, transfer your cookies to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake your cookies at 375F/190C for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
Let them cool.
While they’re cooling, let’s make the icing!
For the icing you will need:
- ½ Cup powdered sugar
- 3-4 tsp lemon juice
- Red food coloring
- Blue food coloring
- Yellow food coloring
- Black food coloring
You will also need:
- 1 medium bowl
- 4 smaller bowls
- Something to spread your icing with
In your medium bowl, mix together your powdered sugar and lemon juice.
Once it’s thoroughly mixed, divide it up equally between your four small bowls.
Using your blue, red and yellow food coloring, dye three of the cups of icing to the hue of your liking but leave the fourth cup white.
Using the white icing as glue, spread a layer over top one of your baked cookies and press a second on top of it, creating a sandwich. Set the sandwiched cookie aside to firm up and continue to create icing glued cookie sandwiches using the clear icing.
After you’ve glued all your cookies together, use your colored icing to ice your Insignia badges in blue (Medical/Science), yellow (Command) and red icing (Engineering).
We’ve chosen to highlight our command badges as this recipe is in honor of Picard.
To do this, use your toothpick dipped in black food coloring and carefully draw on the Command star insignia.
(Side note: Feel free to embellish your badges with any insignia you desire. As with all space adventures, the sky is literally the limit!)
Set all your cookies somewhere cool and dry and allow the icing to set on top and firm up before storing.
Enjoy your Federation approved cookies with a cup of warm Earl Grey tea!
