It was old reruns of Star Trek: The Original Series (then simply called Star Trek) that set me on the path to becoming a lifelong sci-fi fan and a Trekkie/Trekker.
I remember watching Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Bones (DeForest Kelley) materialize on a new alien planet alongside a bunch of redshirts doomed to die horribly during the episode. And as I sat down for supper, watching Star Trek, I was ready to join the crew of the starship Enterprise and boldly go where no one had gone before. Good times.
This year marked the 50th anniversary of the beloved sci-fi franchise, and a bunch of new books were released to mark the occasion, including Gerald Gurian’s To Boldly Go: Rare Photos from the TOS Soundstage book series. The first one, released in March, covered the first season of the Gene Roddenberry series, while the second book, which has hit book stores earlier this month, covered Season 2.
Below is a very small sample of some of those rare Season 2 behind-the-scenes photos collected in the second book, and you can find a bunch more on io9. Take a look at the gallery, and let us know what you think. Was Star Trek: The Original Series' second season your favorite?
