Did you guess who Missy really was? Because Moffat tried to trick you, but you weren't listening, apparently.
Spoiler alert! We're going to talk about the big reveal that happened on Doctor Who a week and a half ago. We good? Great.
I am genuinely not sure how anyone on our planet (or the other planet that shadows ours, where the Illuminati lizard people who control us are from) didn't figure out that Missy = Mistress = Master. Maybe it was too obvious? Regardless, Missy is the Master. Or was, until she got blasted to bits by Cyberman Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart (grumble, grumble). She did get blasted to bits, right? More on that in a moment.
Showrunner (and guy a lot of people have feelings about) Steven Moffat didn't want people to know who Missy was, but the big reveal scene was filmed outside. With a lot of people watching, so that was a bit of a challenge. And how did the Moff think to handle it? Apparently he had Missy actor Michelle Gomez use a different line at one point.
I actually had her say she was a Random Access Neural Interface.
Or, RANI, if you prefer. The Rani, in case you weren't aware, was a villainous Time Lord introduced in the '80s who was more into sadistic scientific experimentation than ruling the known universe like, say, the Master. Yes, old crafty Moffat thought he'd have you all fooled by pretending Missy was the other other renegade Time Lord from Gallifrey. There was just one problem.
Whenever I arrange skullduggery, no-one ever buggering notices. We thought ‘everyone’s bound to overhear that’. Deaf bunch of b******s.
Why couldn't you have listened, people who were watching filming that day? Then we all could have been fooled and the whole "Missy is really the Master" thing might have been a bigger surprise! Or it could have been like that time J.J. Abrams pretended Benedict Cumberbatch wasn't playing Khan and fans got really mad.
What do you think? Would that have been better? Or would you be even angrier to have Moffat playing games with your hearts that way?
Wait! Before you answer, let's talk about the death of the Missy Master. Because, and once again I don't know how this can be a surprise to any of you, she's not actually dead. In fact, when Michelle Gomez asked if she'd be back next season, she answered in the affirmative!
“‘Yes’ is my answer. I’ll be back. Can I say that? Am I allowed? If not… well, I guess we’ll have to see how she’s received…”
So you can add this to your list of questions -- are you glad Michelle Gomez will be Missy again? Or was evil Mary Poppins not quite your cuppa?
