John Carter isn't the first adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' novel A Princess of Mars—that was a 2009 direct-to-DVD Asylum studio film starring Traci Lords. But even from a one-and-a-half-minute trailer, below, we see the newest adaptation from Disney looks far more faithful to the 1917 book.
If you've read A Princess of Mars, you know that Edgar himself explains how he came into possession of his (fictional) uncle John Carter's manuscript. Carter, a Civil War veteran-turned-prospector, tells the tale in first person: While fleeing an Indian attack, he hid in some caves and mysteriously found himself transported to Mars. There, with a newfound super strength, he tries to restore a conflicted, dying planet.
The trailer, featuring Friday Night Lights alum Taylor Kitsch in all his sweaty glory, has it all. Burroughs learning about his uncle's demise, and Carter waking up on Mars and battling various foes on Barsoom (the native word for "Mars") as well as meeting his love interest, Princess Dejah Thoris. John Carter looks like something we want to see.
And one thing the trailer has that isn't in the book? Clothes. Princess Dejah is nude throughout the novel. (Perhaps that's why former porn star Traci Lords was offered the role in the 2009 version. ...)
