With filming on the new Tomb Raider movie currently underway, it was only a matter of time before we got a first look at Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) in the iconic role of Lara Croft.
The first behind-the-scenes pics from Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug's (The Wave) Tomb Raider reboot have made their merry way online, and now we have our first peek at the Academy Award-winning actress (for The Danish Girl) in action (I mean, like, literally -- she's doing some very physical stuff in those pics) — and in costume — as Lara Croft.
And naysayers be damned, because she looks very Lara Croft-y. Check it out.
Based on Square Enix's popular video game franchise, the live-action adaptation will deliver a new origin story for the character and will reportedly take cues from the acclaimed 2013 rebooted game, which sees a young and untested Lara Croft fighting for survival in her first big adventure.
Having played the excellent 2013 rebooted game and its recent follow-up, Rise of the Tomb Raider, I'm very excited to see what Uthaug will do with the film. Let's just hope this one finally breaks the dreaded video game adaptation curse because, frankly, it's getting depressing. I'm looking at you, Assassin's Creed.
Starring Dominic West as Lord Richard Croft, Daniel Wu as Lu Ren and Walton Goggins as the movie's villain, Father Mathias Vogel, Tomb Raider will open on March 16, 2018.
