We’ve known for a while that Mark Hamill was joining Season 2 of Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters animated series, but Netflix has long remained quiet on how Hamill will lend his vocal talents to the show.
Now we’re finally getting our first look at Hamill’s new character in a pair of fresh clips that accompany the debut of Trollhunters’ second season, which Netflix has just made available in its entirety — and he’s definitely adding a deliciously spicy twist for fans already hooked by Season 1.
Hamill is playing Dictatious, the evil twin brother of troll advisor and all-around good guy ... er, troll ... Blinky, who’s voiced by Kelsey Grammer (in a role that’s already earned Grammer an Emmy). Hamill’s voice acting chops have taken him on a long career outside the Star Wars universe, notably as the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series, as well as a zillion other memorable animated and video game characters.
Speaking to Comicbook.com, which first revealed Hamill’s role, Trollhunters executive producer Marc Guggenheim said the idea took shape once showrunners realized they had two great talents on whom to base a high-contrast, give-and-take character relationship.
“We had this idea to give Blinky a twin very, very early on. I think it was actually an idea that came about even before we started Season 1, just as we were ripping on the show. Like, 'Oh, it would be fun to meet Blinky's twin brother at some point,' Guggenheim said. "Once you hit upon the idea of an evil twin for Blinky, who's voiced by Kelsey Grammer, then you gotta then go find an actor who is of Kelsey's caliber, which is a very, very small list."
Trollhunters already has an all-star roster of vocal talent, featuring Season 2 newcomers Lena Headey and David Bradley, along with returning talents Ron Perlman (Bular), Steven Yeun (Steve), Anjelica Huston (Queen Ursurna), and the late Anton Yelchin, whose work on Season 2 already had been recorded before his death.
Set in the small suburb of Arcadia, Trollhunters tells the ongoing saga of teenage hero Jim and his human friends, who discover a secret world underneath their town and soon find themselves invested in the fate of the troll world just beneath their feet. You can hear all about Season 2, and how it was influenced by Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back, in SYFY WIRE's interview with Guggenheim, here.
