It’s been a long time coming, but we finally have our first look at the new CBS series Star Trek: Discovery. But it’s not exactly what we expected. In a good way.
Entertainment Weekly debuted the first photo from the show, showing off two key cast members from the prequel, set before Star Trek: The Original Series. The pic features Michelle Yeoh (Captain Philippa Georgiou) and Sonequa Martin-Green (First Officer Michael Burnham) standing on an alien planet, sporting desert gear and an old-school communicator (and possibly a tricorder in that hip case).
Most notably, there are no Starfleet uniforms to be seen. Instead, they look more like Rey exploring the sands of Jakku — not a Starfleet crew on an alien world. But it still looks great, and gives us a glimpse at how Starfleet operated before Kirk was tooling around in the Enterprise. Digging a bit deeper, initial reports seemed to indicate the characters Burnham and Georgiou actually serve on different ships. So Discovery could focus on the crews of more than one ship, breaking tradition for a typical Trek series.
Along with Yeah and Martin-Green, the cast of Discovery includes Jason Isaacs (Awake) as Captain Lorca; Doug Jones (Hellboy) as Lt. Saru; James Frain (Gotham) as Spock’s father; and Anthony Rapp (Rent) as Lt. Stamets.
The show is set to premiere later this year on CBS, then migrate to the streaming service CBS All Access.
What do you think of the first pic? Is it what you were expecting?
