First look: Supernatural's Scooby-Doo crossover pushes meta boundaries

The Supernatural crew — including brothers Sam and Dean Winchester and angel/human/guy that won’t stay dead Castiel — has almost as much history and lore as the Scooby-Doo gang.

Both shows have seemingly been around forever, but in the grand tradition of the Globetrotters and John Cena, they’re now crossing over. In a new episode of Supernatural titled “ScoobyNatural,” Sam (Jared Padalecki), Dean (Jensen Ackles), and Castiel (Misha Collins) get animated to help Mystery Incorporated with a ghostly mystery. At least that makes more sense than the Hanna-Barbera characters meeting up with Don Knotts.

We’ve got a first look at the animated dimension shift, replete with a real monster (no masked old-timer here) and plenty of flirtation toward the cartoon world’s most-hit-on woman, in these 27 pictures from the episode. Everyone’s goofing off and it’s all fun and/or games until someone gets locked into Hell. Which probably won’t happen here, but it does give Scooby-Doo an added element of danger.

As far as wacky episodes go, this might be one of the wildest yet for a show that has been on more than a decade and tried some bonkers stuff along the way. From being trapped in a world of sitcom tropes to timeloops where Sam keeps dying, it's done almost everything. Except for a Scooby crossover. Until now.

“ScoobyNatural” will air March 29 on The CW.
