Sony Pictures has unleashed the first trailer for the new animated CG movie Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars.
The fifth entry in the Starship Troopers franchise (only Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers saw a theatrical release in 1997, while the rest were straight-to-video releases), the animated sequel sees the return of original cast members Casper Van Dien as the voice of Johnny Rico (Van Dien reprised the role of Rico for the live-action Starship Troopers 3: Marauder in 2008) and Dina Meyer as the voice of Dizzy Flores. This comes as a bit of a surprise, because the character met her demise in the first movie. So, what the heck is going on?! Mmmm ...
Also voicing a character in the animated movie is comedian and Starship Troopers super fan DeRay Davis (21 Jump Street). You know what’s even more cool about Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars? The screenplay was penned by the original film’s writer, Ed Neumeier. Here’s a rundown of the concept via Coming Soon:
In Traitor of Mars, Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) has just been demoted and sent to a small satellite station on Mars whilst the Federation attacks the bugs’ home planet. While trying to train his new recruits on this remote quiet station, the bugs show up in a surprise attack but the Federation’s Fleet is too far away to help. It’s up to Rico and his Troopers to save the planet and uncover how the bugs made it so close to home.
You’ll have to be quick to catch the animated film, because Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars will unfold onto the big screen for one night only, via Fathom Events on Monday, August 21, at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. local time. Each screening will boast a “special introduction by Neumeier and Van Dien and will offer new behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the filmmakers.”
