If this movie doesn't make you rethink putting your whole life on social media, then nothing will.
The Circle is based on a best-selling novel by Dave Eggers in which a young woman named Mae (played in the film by Emma Watson) gets a job with the world's largest tech and social media company, founded and run by a man named Bailey (Tom Hanks). But after being encouraged to live her life online and with complete transparency, Mae begins to learn that The Circle may have sinister intentions not just for her but for everyone it ensnares.
The movie was directed and scripted by James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now), and clearly the subject matter couldn't be more relevant in an age when even the next president of the United States is constantly blurting stuff out on Twitter. But the ramifications go far beyond just spilling your thoughts online, as The Circle also tackles the more dystopian themes of what it means to lose all privacy and live in a constant surveillance society.
In addition to Hanks and Harry Potter alumnus Watson, The Circle also stars John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Karen Gillan (Doctor Who), Patton Oswalt (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Bill Paxton (Aliens) -- a nice group of genre favorites there. The movie opens on April 28, 2017. Watch the trailer below and let us know your thoughts -- but not privately, of course.
