Even though he’s been exiled to Earth 2, where he came across Gorilla City, Gorilla Grodd is set to return for a two-episode arc on The Flash later this year. Not only is the villainous psychic ape returning for an encore with the Scarlet Speedster (Grant Gustin), his return to Central City will also bring with him a frequent Flash comic book ally: Solovar.
Solovar’s introduction to the Arrowverse was announced by executive producer Andrew Kreisberg during The CW’s TCA presentation yesterday. Kreisberg also revealed that Solovar will be voiced by none other than Keith David (The Thing, They Live), and the character will make his TV debut — alongside Grodd's return — in episodes 13 and 14.
The wise and benevolent leader of Gorilla City, Solovar was created almost 60 years ago by writer John Broome and artist Carmine Infantino in 1959, when he first appeared in The Flash #106. A sentient gorilla with superpowers (he, too, has psychic powers), Solovar was a longtime enemy to Gorilla Grodd and a friend to Barry Allen.
Although we’ve known about Grodd’s return for a little while, the arrival of Solovar on the superhero TV series is a pleasant surprise. I'm looking forward to seeing how The Flash will portray the antagonistic relationship between the two sentient apes and Team Flash finding a new ally in Solovar.
The Flash returns on Jan. 10 on The CW. Are you looking forward to Solovar's debut in the speedy series' upcoming two-parter?
