The season finale of The CW’s Flash dropped some fairly major hints about where the story would go in Season 3, and now we finally have confirmation: Get ready for Flashpoint.
While chatting on Twitter, star Grant Gustin confirmed the third season of the hit series would tackle the iconic Flashpoint storyline from the comics (set off by Barry’s decision in the Season 2 finale to go back and save his mother’s life). Just don’t expect it to be an exact take on that story, as Gustin stresses they’re telling Flashpoint their “own way.” Considering how good a job the series has done with picking, choosing and remixing parts of the DC canon, it’s exciting to think what producer Greg Berlanti & Co. could do with this as a jumping off point.

If you’re unfamiliar, the Flashpoint storyline follows Barry Allen as he wakes up in a world very different from the one he knows. There are small and large differences, such as Thomas Wayne taking up the mantle of Batman after his son Bruce is killed, Cyborg being a major hero, and Superman being detained by the U.S. government. The CW series obviously can’t go that big (probably), but there’s more than enough canon on the TV side of things to play with in showing how Barry’s decision can affect the world.
The big question is how long this storyline will play out? Will we be in this Flashpoint universe for much of the season, or will it be resolved in an opening arc of a few episodes? Also: Will they go so far as to cross the Flashpoint over with Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow? It could be confusing — but also damn ambitious.
What do you think of the news? Glad to see Flash finally tackle Flashpoint?
