Horror cinema lost one of its treasures on Friday with the sad passing of Betsy Palmer at a nursing care home in Connecticut. Palmer is most recognized from her role as Pamela Voorhees, Jason's deranged, overprotective mother from the original Friday the 13th films. She played Jason's homicidal parent in the first two movies of the franchise, an ex-cook of Camp Crystal Lake whose deformed son accidentally drowned while careless counselors were off getting naked in the cabins.
Palmer, a life member of The Actors Studio, was a panelist on the popular TV quiz show I've Got a Secret from 1958-1967, and her early career was filled with appearances on Kraft Theatre, Playhouse 90 and Studio One in television’s golden years. Her movie credits include Mr. Roberts with Henry Fonda, The Long Gray Line starring Tyrone Power, Queen Bee with Joan Crawford and The Tin Star alongside Fonda. But for most of us, it will be her iconic performance as a loving mother who loses her head over her child's tragic death that she will be remembered fondly for.
Thank you, Betsy, for the memories, and our condolences go out to her friends, fans and family.
