The 3D rerelease of Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace means many things: more money for the folks at Lucasfilm, a new chance for first timers to see the flick theatrically and, of course, an opportunity to make fun of the often-maligned prequel all over again.
The funny people at Chicago's legendary Second City know this all too well, and they've even made their own trailer for the flick to unleash their snark. It's only about a minute long, but if you're among the fans who didn't like Phantom Menace the first time around, you'll recognize a lot of these thoughts.
"This February, re-experience the biggest disappointment of your life," the voiceover says as the trailer kicks off. The video then launches into attacks on "the same two-dimensional script, now in three dimensions," George Lucas' attempts to Jedi-mind-trick us into thinking we haven't seen all this stuff before, and Jar Jar ("See the racist overtones fly out of the screen!").
All this re-mockery of the re-release of Phantom Menace is sort of like being in a time warp. It's almost like we're back in a world where Attack of the Clones hasn't been made yet, and we can still have hope that it'll turn out all right. Even if that doesn't work for you, just watch and be amused by this video.
And if you are planning to go check out Phantom Menace 3D when it opens this weekend, just remember Second City's final message: "May the Remorse be with you."
