With the realm about to engage in all-out war, and the undead armies on the way, Tyrion Lannister might agree that a strong beer is in order for the denizens of the Seven Kingdoms on Game of Thrones.
Thankfully, Brewery Ommegang is at the ready, much like that trusty squire Podrick, to serve up the ale we need to get through a war for the throne – and to help us cope with two months of waiting until the penultimate season of Game of Thrones premieres on July 16.
Bend the Knee is a golden ale brewed with honey, and marks Ommegang’s eighth collaboration with the HBO series. To celebrate the beer, available May 22, Syfy Wire and yours truly traveled north to Cooperstown, N.Y., for an exclusive 'first taste' of the 9% ABV ale.
Brewed with "pils malt and flaked oats and hopped with Saaz, Bravo and Styrian Golding hops" for a fruitiness from Ommegang's signature house yeast, Bend the Knee has a light sweetness from wildflower honey, and "firm hop bitterness."
But there is so much more to the beer than that, as described by brewmaster Phil Leinhart (which, by the way, is a great Game of Thrones-esque last name).
Check out our video below to get the low-down on Bend the Knee and watch as I take the black to chat with Leinhart and play around with the visitors at Ommegang's café to see who they think should win the Iron Throne.
And don’t miss out on Bend the Knee when it becomes begins hitting retailers next week. It will be available in three collectible 750ml bottles, finished in matte black and adorned with one of the three Great House sigils: Stark, Targaryen, or Lannister.
And, unlike Tyrion, please enjoy responsibly.
