I don't know if you guys heard, but it was recently announced that Torchwood fan favorite Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd) would be back in a new series of Big Finish radio plays. Since the beloved character died in 2009’s Torchwood: Children of Earth, how will he make his return? Will he come back as a ghost, or will he truly be flesh and blood? And if so, will it be a wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey thing?

Radio Times got the scoop on how it'll work out – but if you were expecting to see the Torchwood gang get back together, looks like we may be a tad disappointed. David-Lloyd told the site, "The series is linked – it’s about the same event, the same story, but the team have been split up. So it’s from their different points of view."

The first episode will see Captain Jack (John Barrowman) take center stage in Torchwood: The Conspiracy, followed by David-Lloyd’s Ianto Jones in the second episode, titled Torchwood: Fall to Earth, and so on, and so forth, for a total of six episodes. Since Ianto died in the critically acclaimed Children of Earth miniseries, when will the story take place?

"I think I can say ... it’s not ghost Ianto, it’s flesh Ianto saving the world," David-Lloyd confirmed. "It’s during Torchwood, it’s during the time frame the first two series were set."

The actor wouldn’t reveal which other original cast members (Burn Gorman, Naoko Mori, Eve Myles) would be back, saying:

"I haven’t been given a definite yes or no about exactly who’s coming back, I’ll leave that to Big Finish to announce. But I would have thought some of them will be back – I’d like to think so. I should think we’d have at least two or three of the other cast members back, especially if it’s set in that time."

Gareth David Lloyd hopes the team will be back together, but he’s as much in the dark as we are on the subject. However, he did share his excitement about his character’s return to the world of Torchwood, saying:

"Ianto’s returned! Yeah, it’s been great, and the fans are over the moon, which is great. They worked so long and hard to a) get Ianto back, and b) get Torchwood back as well, because it’s been in a bit of a limbo for the past few years.

"It’s brilliant to be back. I read the script, the words just flew off the page, and it was a real delight to do Ianto again. His voice just came back to me.

"I was a bit worried about whether after all this much time has passed, how quickly he would come back. But due to James Goss’ fantastic writing, and the fact that I think Ianto is ingrained in my subconscious, it was a real pleasure, and easy."

Here’s the official synopsis for the Ianto Jones-centric Torchwood radio play:

THE SKYPUNCHER IS THE FIRST PRIVATE SPACEFLIGHT. BUT EPHRAIM SALT'S VISIONARY PROJECT HAS GONE HORRIBLY WRONG - THE SHIP IS FALLING OUT OF THE SKY AND THERE SEEMS NO WAY TO STOP IT. IANTO JONES THOUGHT THE FLIGHT WOULD BE SABOTAGED. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS... HE'S ON BOARD.

Torchwood: Fall to Earth will be available from Big Finish this October. Are you excited about the new Torchwood radio plays and Ianto Jones’ return to the Whoniverse-at-large?
