The SYFY-produced pilot based on Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin’s novella, Nightflyers, is heading for a straight-to-series order.
The 1980 text is set in the fictional "Thousand Worlds" universe (as several of Martin's other works are, including Dying of the Light, Sandkings, and A Song for Lya) and was made into a 1987 film starring James Avery. The story follows a group of scientists who begin a deep space voyage to find alien lifeform, and in doing so fall victim to the ship's malevolent computer.
The pilot for the show was written by Jeff Buhler with director Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) on board to serve as an executive producer.
"We are looking forward to diving deeper into George R.R. Martin's chilling world of Nightflyers," NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment's Bill McGoldrick said in a statement in June. "The script that Jeff delivered encapsulates this classic sci-fi horror story and adapts it to a platform where we can truly explore the depths of madness."
Sounds terrifying! We can’t wait.
Deadline is reporting that Daniel Cerone (Dexter, The Blacklist, The Mentalist) will serve as the show runner.
