We don't yet know when Peter Capaldi will end his tenure as the Twelfth Doctor. For all we know, he could end up breaking Tom Baker's record as longest-serving Doctor, as Capaldi's a Doctor Who superfan who seems to adore the role. That hasn't stopped fans from speculating about who'll be next in the TARDIS, though, and as usual when talk of Doctor Who succession comes up, we're still talking about the possibility of a woman finally taking over the role.
Of course, the idea is still met with resistance by more than a few Who fans, and showrunner Steven Moffat noted a few weeks ago that it was important to him to, someday, find an actress that even the most steadfast naysayer could get behind. That's a lofty goal, and it's quite likely that when it a woman does take on the role, it'll happen regardless of any outcry from fans who are set in their ways. Still, Moffat's right that a very striking, strong actress is needed if they're going to make this particular bit of TV history, and now it seems we have a new candidate who fits that description: Agent Carter star Hayley Atwell.
Over the weekend, while answering fan questions on Twitter, Atwell was asked if she'd like to join the long line of famous British actors who've guest-starred on the series. It turns out she has bigger dreams than that.
@ohmyjlc I'd like to BE Doctor Who— Hayley Atwell (@HayleyAtwell) August 14, 2015
Atwell's a very talented actress with a very devoted fanbase, and she's already got plenty of genre adventure experience. For more than a few viewers, she'd be an absolutely perfect Doctor. That said, she already has an ongoing TV gig, and Capaldi doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. Still, what if she got a shot at the job in a few years? There's a good chance she'd knock it out of the park.
What do you think? Should Atwell be our first female Doctor?
