If anyone other than Sam Raimi had said it, we probably wouldn’t believe it, but Evil Dead could be coming to the small screen — with legendary chin himself Bruce Campbell back in the saddle.
While talking it up at San Diego Comic-Con, Raimi made the surprise announcement that he and his brother Ivan are currently writing a small-screen version of Evil Dead, with plans to bring Ash himself back to star.
Sadly, Raimi didn’t reveal many other details, but there are myriad directions to take the franchise at this point. We’d have to think this might be an evolution of Raimi’s long-gestating hopes to make a proper Evil Dead 4, and we’d love to see a few more deadite-slaying adventures spread out on the small screen. Here’s the bomb Raimi dropped, verbatim:
“I always loved working on that series with Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert and my brother and I are writing the Evil Dead TV show right now…with Bruce Campbell.”
Yeah, just let it sink in. We’d almost given up hope of seeing more Evil Dead at this point, especially after the studio went the reboot route in 2013 with a straight-up horror spin on the franchise. But despite working on everything from Spider-Man to Drag Me to Hell in the intervening years, he still has a soft spot for ol’ Ash.
Though the original Evil Dead trilogy is gory and a bit raunchy at times, television has come a long way the past few decades, and you’d think Raimi could do just about whatever he wanted at the right cable network. Now, the big question — will the potential series pickup after the WTF-ery of Army of Darkness? We really hope so.
