In an awesome piece of casting news, X-Files actress Gillian Anderson has joined the cast of Bryan Fuller’s American Gods.
Anderson will play Media, who’s described as the mouthpiece for the New Gods in Starz’s upcoming TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s iconic and award-winning fantasy novel.
The character serves as the New American Gods' public face and media representative, who likes to take on the form of various iconic celebrities and lives off the attention and worship people give their TVs, laptops, iPhones and more. Media is the cheerful spokesperson who’s always in control as she spins stories in whatever way suits her best.
American Gods imagines a war brewing between the old gods and the new (nope, not the ones from Game of Thrones). The Old Gods being the ones we know from the mythological pantheons from around the world who are steadily losing believers to the New Gods, who reflect modern society’s love of money, technology, media, celebrities and drugs.
The series centers on Shadow Moon (The 100’s Ricky Whittle), an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and travel buddy to Mr. Wednesday (Deadwood's Ian McShane), a con man who's in reality the All-Father Odin on a cross-country mission to gather the Old Gods in preparation to battle those New Gods.
The series was created by Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Hannibal, the new Star Trek series) and Michael Green (Green Lantern), who act as writers and showrunners on Starz's upcoming fantasy series. David Slade (Hannibal, Powers) is directing the pilot, as well as other episodes.
Are you excited about Gillian Anderson being cast as Media on American Gods? Other cast members include Emily Browning (Sucker Punch), Cloris Leachman (Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse), Peter Stormare (22 Jump Street), Jonathan Tucker (Kingdom) and Crispin Glover (Back to the Future).
