It's been almost a decade since Hellboy II: The Golden Army dropped, but Guillermo del Toro hasn't given up on finishing his trilogy.
The director started a Twitter poll to ask fans if they were still interested in seeing another Hellboy movie, and (surprise!) they are still into it. Del Toro promised that if the poll garnered 100,000 responses, he would set up a meeting with Hellboy star Ron Perlman and comic creator Mike Mignola. It only took about a day, and del Toro’s poll exploded, so now the filmmaker says he's working on getting everyone involved locked in for a summit to discuss possibly getting the project on track.
There have been rumblings of a third Hellboy movie for years, but nothing has ever materialized. The Golden Army didn’t exactly light the box office on fire, so Hollywood has been lukewarm to the idea of ponying up $100 million or more for a comic book movie that doesn't have Batman or Iron Man in it. But, on the flip side, audiences are much more open to something weird these days — and if the movie ends up being awesome, it could turn into a hit.
At this point, it’s just a question of whether del Toro has the clout to make it happen. We'd imagine there are a whole lot of fans out there crossing their fingers that he does.
