Filming gets underway on Han Solo movie

Another day, another Star Wars film goes into production.

Lucasfilm is certainly sticking to the schedule it laid out a few years back, with both Skywalker saga movies and stand-alone efforts coming out of the gate fast and furious.

Just as we all settle down from the excitement surrounding the first spinoff movie, Rogue One (which is still out there in theaters making bank, by the way), and the unveiling of The Last Jedi as the title of this December's Episode VIII, word has arrived that the second stand-alone "Star Wars story," the much-anticipated prequel about the early days of Han Solo, has started filming today (January 30).

Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie) are the guiding hands behind the camera for this one, and Miller sent out a tweet earlier today -- featuring a joke that all Star Wars fans will get -- marking the commencement of shooting.

(By the way, Red Cup is just the in-production code name for the film and not the actual title -- it's apparently a twist on those "Solo" brand cups we've all drunk out of at parties. But if you see any filming locations with that name in your area, hurry down there.)

The untitled Han Solo movie will star Alden Ehrenreich as the young Corellian smuggler, Donald Glover as young Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson as Han's mentor and Emilia Clarke in a yet-to-be-specified role.

We don't know anything yet about the plot or what stage of his life we'll meet Han Solo in, but Lord and Miller (who also wrote the script) are among the most clever filmmakers working today -- if they can make entertaining films from 21 Jump Street and toy building blocks, they can probably do a lot with a cocky space adventurer.

The Han Solo movie is tentatively scheduled to open on May 25, 2018.
