We’ve got some casting news for you all, including one iconic Star Wars vet making a foray into voice acting, a Baldwin brother joining the cast of a horror show, and a trio of actors familiar with playing superheroes (or villains).
First up, Harrison Ford is set to lending his voice-acting talents to The Secret Life of Pets 2, the first time the actor has worked on an animated feature.
Ford will join the cast of the sequel to the 2016 smash hit, which includes returning cast members Kevin Hart, Jenny Slate, Eric Stonestreet, Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Dana Carvey, Hannibal Buress, and Bobby Moynihan, and newcomers Tiffany Haddish, Patton Oswalt, Nick Kroll, and Pete Holmes, Deadline reports.
Sources have told Deadline that Oswalt has taken over the role of lead dog Max, replacing comedian Louis C.K., who is not returning for the sequel following allegations of sexual misconduct against him.
Chris Renaud, who helmed the first film, is returning to the director’s chair. No word yet on what Ford’s character (or animal) will be. But is it safe to assume that his character will be... scruffy-looking?
The Secret Life of Pets 2 is slated to open in theatres June 7, 2019.
Meanwhile, William Baldwin has joined the cast of USA Network/SYFY’s new TV series based on the popular dystopian horror film franchise The Purge. The Backdraft and Gossip Girl star will play the recurring role of Don Ryker, the managing partner at Jane’s (Amanda Warren) investment firm, and her boss. Although he appears to be an all-around decent guy, Don harbors a secret regarding the Purge.
Baldwin joins a cast that includes Lili Simmons (Ray Donovan), Amanda Warren (The Leftovers), Colin Woodell (Unsane), Hannah Anderson (New Mutants), Lee Tergesen (Oz), Gabriel Chavarria (East Los High), and Jessica Garza (Six).
Apparently, The Purge series will be taking a slightly different angle than the movies. Rather than focus exclusively on the people going on a massive 12-hour anything-goes crime spree, it will show how this tradition affects folks the other 364 days of the year. That actually sounds really interesting, since we’ve always had a lot of logistical questions about how this world works. (And don't worry — word has it that the show will also get its purge on.)
And finally, Hugh Jackman (Wolverine, Logan), Zoe Saldana (Star Trek, Guardians of the Galaxy) and Zach Galifianakis (The LEGO Batman Movie) are set to star in an animated film from the studio behind The Boxtrolls and ParaNorman.
The movie, currently being referred to simply as Film Five (being that it will be the fifth feature from animation studio Laika—Kubo and the Two Strings and Coraline being the other two) is in production at the studio and will be released in the U.S. by Annapurna Pictures.
We don’t know much about the film so far, other than that Laika is describing it as a “globetrotting comedy-adventure,” and that Chris Butler (ParaNorman) is directing. That, of course, and the cast is pretty rock solid. We’ll keep our eyes peeled.
