The Flash family is growing. Over the past week, The CW's made three casting announcements. First, Law & Order veteran Jesse L. Martin was hired to play Detective West, the surrogate father to Grant Gustin's Barry Allen. West is also the real dad of Allen's potential love interest, Iris West.
But perhaps the biggest news stems from the addition of Danielle Panabaker and Rick Cosnett. Fans of The Vampire Diaries will remember Cosnett from his role as Dr. Wes Maxfield. While Panabaker has appeared in the Friday the 13th reboot, The Crazies and Piranha 3DD. On The Flash, the actors will play Detective Eddie Thawne and Caitlin Snow, respectively.
If you're familiar with the Flash comics, Thawne and Snow should have caught your attention. Thawne is the name of a supervillain called Professor Zoom, aka Reverse Flash. He's one of the biggest, if not the biggest, rivals of the Flash. In the pilot, Thawne's described as "a recent transfer to the Central City Police Department, whose past is a mystery and who harbors a dark secret."
Snow is a Big Bad in her own right. She's one of many to hold the title of Killer Frost. As you might expect, she has the ability to manipulate cold and ice. Panabaker's incarnation is "a highly intelligent bioengineering expert who lost her fiancé during an explosion at S.T.A.R. Labs."
We know their origins in the comics, but we're not sure if and when they'll fulfill their evil destinies on the show. Remember, The Flash is from the same guys who brought us Arrow. Prior to its first season, everyone thought Tommy Meryln was going to be a bad guy. But it was really just a bait and switch. We're excited to see how they handle Thawne and Snow.
The Flash pilot will be directed by David Nutter, who also shot Arrow's pilot as well as episodes of Game of Thrones and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The pilot's written by DC Comics boss Geoff Johns, Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti.
