If you're still having doubts about The Amazing Spider-Man, this story's for you! According to Stan Lee, there's nothing to worry about. The film is in capable hands—and Andrew Garfield has his Spidey stamp of approval.
When Tobey Maguire was originally cast in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, Lee thought he was the perfect Peter Parker. He went on to play the character in three films and almost a fourth before Sony pulled the plug. Instead of doing another sequel, they opted for a reboot and scrapped the old cast and crew.
New director Marc Webb searched far and wide for an actor good enough to fill Maguire's shoes, and he found him in Andrew Garfield. So does Lee agree with his casting? He sure does!
While attending the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, Lee told Access Hollywood that he loved Maguire's work but Garfield brings something different to the character.
"I am Tobey Maguire's biggest fan. He's talented, he's the nicest guy in the world, nobody could have done a better job on Spider-Man than he did," said Lee. "But Andrew Garfield brings his own charisma to this role, and he's as good as Tobey was. I think people are going to love him."
Maguire and Garfield have a lot in common. They're both unassuming and look like the Average Joe. But when it comes to their performances, they're completely different.
Lee says Garfield "doesn't imitate Tobey, he does his own version of it. Just as Tobey was the essence of Peter Parker, so is Andrew Garfield." He exclaimed, "You'll love it!"
The Amazing Spider-Man hits theaters July 3.
