With J.J. Abrams a little busy in a galaxy far, far away — and Roberto Orci out of the directing chair for unknown reasons — Paramount Pictures has its phasers set on a few new directors to take over Star Trek 3.
According to a report at Deadline, Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) is at the top of the list, but there are three additional options nipping at his heels. Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) and Justin Lin (Fast & Furious) are also in the hunt. All four are solid options, and every one of ‘em is coming off a solid hit. Lin has the action chops, but we’d give Wyatt the edge after he blew our socks off with Apes.
Another excellent option, Duncan Jones (Source Code), was also being rumored for the role. But the director of the upcoming Warcraft film dropped a note on Twitter following the initial report to let fans know he’s flattered to be rumored for the job — but wanted to remove his name from the conversation so he can focus on some personal projects next. Fair enough, but along with Wyatt, Jones would’ve topped our personal list.
Very flattering being on short list for Star Trek, but won't be doing it. Absolutely MUST make my own thing next, or I'll die of old age!— Duncan Jones (@ManMadeMoon) December 15, 2014
Fans who have been keeping up with the Star Wars directing saga might’ve noticed a name absent from that list. Yep, it seems the grassroots push to get former Next Generation co-star Jonathan Frakes a shot at an interview is apparently falling on deaf ears. Sure, it’s fan-casting, but Frakes did direct the stellar Star Trek: First Contact — so it wasn’t crazy to think he might at least warrant a conversation.
Who would you like to see take over the captain’s chair next?
