You all remember that fleeting moment in the '90s when Tim Burton was lined up to do for Superman what he did for Batman, right? Well, judging by these costume tests, we should feel lucky it fell apart.
Burton's Superman Lives—initially based on Kevin Smith's script (the one he memorably and profanely details the writing of on stage)—was to star Nicolas Cage and pit Superman against Lex Luthor, Brainiac and Doomsday. Looking to completely reimagine the Man of Steel, Burton directed his design crew to steer away from the traditional red-and-blue costume. And judging by these images, which appeared on makeup and visual effects artist Steve Johnson's Facebook page, they steered so far away that they got lost.
You'd be hard pressed to find a more globally recognized icon than Superman—so the decision to nix it in favor of what can only be described as a swirly, mother-of-pearl nightmare is as misbegotten as misbegotten gets.
