We weren't quite sure what we were expecting Johnny Depp to look like in the new movie version of Dark Shadows ... but we weren't expecting this.
Celebuzz managed to get hold of some shots of Depp on the set of the Tim Burton-directed film, in which he stars as centuries-old vampire Barnabas Collins, and there's a few very odd things going on in these unofficial photos.
First of all, Depp is walking around in sunlight, which is not usually what vampires should do if they want to avoid looking like a burger left on the grill too long. Second, he's got more white makeup on his face than legendary mime Marcel Marceau. ... In fact, if we weren't told these were Dark Shadows photos, we might think we were looking at scenes from a Marceau biopic.
The bottom line is that there's vampire pale, and then there's clown white, and in these shots, Depp's face is looking decidedly the latter. Then again, haven't all the characters Depp's played for Burton, like Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands and the Mad Hatter, looked as if they've been chained up in a dark basement for a decade?
Our friends at Badass Digest helpfully suggest that perhaps Barnabas has slathered on the sunblock so that he can actually walk outside, and we'll buy that for now. Otherwise, if this is Burton and Depp's idea of how a vampire should look, they've got some 'splainin' to do.
Below is Barnabas Collins as played by Jonathan Frid in the original ABC-TV daytime soap opera.
What do you make of Depp's look? Are we missing something here, or is this Dark Shadows going to be more of a radical departure than we thought?
