If you’ve ever screamed during Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Creepshow, or any other George Romero movie (don’t forget the terrifying TV series Tales From the Darkside), you don’t need any other horror fan to tell you the unofficially official “Father of the Zombie film” deserves his own Walk of Fame star in Hollywood.
Last summer, it was finally announced this would be happening — but the cost will be horrific.
Now Chris Roe and Matt O’Neill have joined forces with fellow genre legend Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange) to launch an Indiegogo campaign that will get its claws on funds needed to get Romero that Walk of Fame star.
As McDowell states on the campaign page:
As you may be aware, George A. Romero was nominated and selected to receive his long overdue star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this October. The enormous costs associated with this honor are well over $60,000 (including the price of the actual star, and star reception events). We are turning to you who knew and loved George for help to complete our star completion fund. Please look at our Donation Levels for the benefits you will receive.
Your assistance in this great celebration, honoring this wonderful man, is truly appreciated.
You can donate any amount, though the $250 level and up will get you into the George Romero tribute at the Alex Theater the night of the ceremony, seats to an exclusive screening of a Romero film, and your name on the guest list for the star ceremony and reception. There will be mystery VIP speakers at the tribute. You really don’t want to miss this if you’re a Romero enthusiast or obsessed with all things horror.
While the exact date of the star ceremony can’t yet be unearthed because of scary Hollywood legal issues, anyone who donates will find out, appropriately enough, around Halloween.
