With Star Wars: The Force Awakens set to open wide in just a couple of weeks, Disney is teaming up with just about everyone on the planet for the marketing blitz. But, believe it or not, the story behind the official Star Wars ice cream is a bit more interesting than you might expect.
The tiny, Brooklyn-based creamery Ample Hills is set start shipping four-pack pints of its limited-edition “Light Side” and “Dark Side” Star Wars ice cream on Dec. 9. So, why little, bitty Ample Hills, and not a major ice cream company? Because Disney CEO Bob Iger stumbled upon the company’s ice cream after ordering some online, and immediately became a fan.
"As soon as we made the connection with Bob and saw that he was a fan and was helping with so many things in terms of advice and the suggestions, I knew that for me the end-all would be able to pitch to him the idea of doing Star Wars ice cream," Ample Hills owner Brian Smith told Fast Company. "So I pitched it directly to him and he was excited about it and passed it on over to the folks at [Lucasfilm] and to [The Force Awakens director] J.J. Abrams."
Once he got approval from Disney, Smith decided to tell a story with the ice cream. The “Light Side” flavor has marshmallow ice cream and crispy chunks, but also bits of cocoa crisps ("to represent the dark side still lurking within the light") and the “Dark Side” flavor has white chocolate pearls throughout ("to represent the light still hiding in the dark, waiting to burst through”), to go along with dark chocolate ice cream with espresso fudge brownies.
So, basically, this was just a massive case of dumb luck and the fact that Ample Hills apparently makes some deliciously good ice cream. We’d expect they’ll have a whole lot of brand new, very geeky, fans soon, too.
