The first spot for Hugh Jackman's return to sci-fi finds the once-and-future Wolverine training a junkyard automaton to compete on the robot-boxing circuit. And, you know, it doesn't look half bad.
From what one can gather, Jackman plays an old broken-down pugilist who gets his life back on track while training an underdog droid to be the king of the ring. And, I guess, once you get over some of the inherent logic holes—wouldn't you need someone to program this robot to win, instead of sparring with it, Rocky-style?—Real Steel looks pretty decent.
The robots seem designed to sell toys and, as such, they've got personality and flair, and Jackman looks like he's having a good time in this Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) flick, an update of Richard Matheson's 1956 short story.
We'll see if the film delivers when it opens on Oct. 7, 2011.
