Margaret Atwood's The Handmaids Tale ended on a cliffhanger and, while the book has recently been updated with a new chapter, it's likely the Hulu adaptation will borrow the same conceit –– especially now that Hulu's announced a Season 2 renewal for the series.
The series, which has already garnered critical acclaim for its bold storytelling, has struck a chord with viewers as well for it's unflinching view of a totalitarian society in what once used to be the United States. The story has gained new significance in today's political climate.
The news comes after Hulu reported the series premiere episode of The Handmaid's Tale has been viewed by more subscribers than any other Hulu original or acquired series. Season 2 will premiere in 2018 and the news will be officially announced at Hulu's Upfront Presentation on Wednesday.
“The response we’ve seen to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ in just one week since its premiere has been absolutely incredible. It has been an honor to work with this talented team of cast and creators to develop a series that has struck such a chord with audiences across the country,” Craig Erwich, Hulu’s SVP and head of content, said in a statement. “As we continue to expand our strong slate of original programming, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is exactly the type of gripping and thought-provoking storytelling we want to bring to viewers. We can’t wait to explore the world of Gilead and continue Margaret’s vision with another season on Hulu.”
