Though a new 007 film is already in production with Daniel Craig in the title role, his contract expires with the next film after 2015’s Spectre — and many are speculating we could have a very different James Bond after that.
So, what does the man at the center of all that speculation have to say about it? A strange mixture of industry rumors and fan-casting indicates Idris Elba (Luther, Pacific Rim) could potentially get a shot at the title role once Craig turns in his license to kill. That’s significant for two reasons. One: Idris Elba is awesome, and was born to play this role. Two: It’d mark the first time a black actor ever portrayed the iconic spy.
With the buzz reaching a fever pitch, Elba took to Twitter in an effort to chime in on the momentum. Though he snarked about his own good looks, Elba did nothing to quell the push for him to at least be considered for the role, and even thanked the fans who have been pushing for him.
Isn't 007 supposed to handsome? Glad you think I've got a shot! Happy New year people. pic.twitter.com/3g9lAl2Uo3— Idris Elba (@idriselba) December 27, 2014
Would you like to see Elba as the next James Bond?
